The recent announcement from the club that Ben Charlesworth will be joining Lancashire should come as no surprise to Gloucestershire fans. Disappointing but not surprising is the general consensus. On the back of Tom Price, Dominic Goodman, Ajeet Singh Dale, Zaman Akhtar, Archie Bailey and Josh Shaw in 2024, it leaves a huge hole in the side.
What surprises me though is that only one of the 2024 departures went to a Hundred hosting county, yet Gloucestershire still couldn’t compete financially with Sussex, Essex, Durham or Somerset. I believe offers were made but the players thought their careers would ignite elsewhere. In the case of Tom Price that is certainly the case as he has scored three half centuries already this season.
