TS. Eliot, in his 1922 epic poem, The Wasteland, once wrote of the fourth month of the year, “April is the cruellest month…”, and, after 3 straight defeats (two by an innings), and the developing story that your star homegrown opening batsman, was to leave at the end of the season, so it was proving for fans of Gloucestershire cricket.
And so to Derby, and Cameron Bancroft won his third toss from four this year and, under clear skies that were forecast to be set fair for the duration of the match, elected to bat.
Gloucestershire lost an early wicket when Ben Charlesworth threw his hands at a Ben Aitchison delivery that found the outside edge on its way through to Brooke Guest, the Wicketkeeper. Bancroft and Price rebuilt, and although Price too was subsequently dismissed, 80-2 at lunch, and with plenty of batting to come, didn’t seem so bad. Opposition bowlers rarely, if ever, read from the same script however, and once Bancroft had turned Andersson to Bashir at Square Leg, Derbyshire sensed an opportunity. Bracey, Boorman and van Buuren all departed cheaply, and at 167/6, Gloucestershire’s patient start was threatening to unravel. If only someone could stick around with Miles Hammond.
