After a difficult start for Gloucestershire cricket this season, the home faithful had plenty to cheer about in a sun-kissed Bristol yesterday, when the Gloucestershire women earned a convincing win over their Cornish counterparts in Round One of the County Cup. There may well be a double celebration if the men’s side can convert their promising show in Derby over the weekend into a fourth-day victory after two innings defeats and a narrow loss to Lancashire at Old Trafford.
Meg Ahearne was the mainstay of Gloucestershire’s imposing 186-5, making a 38-ball 60 that featured lofted, well-timed strokes down the ground and clips to leg when the Cornish attack strayed in line. Cornwall laboured to 24-1 in the powerplay overs in response and from then it felt like the only unknown was the margin of Gloucestershire’s victory rather than the result. Wickets fell regularly after this point, with seamer Alice Bird taking two wickets in the middle overs, both bowled on loose drives.
